Keywords: Today we are continuing in a study of the Holy Spirit. One of our tendencies is to speak of the Spirit as though "He" is an "It" - an inanimate force or power. We may say, "Can you feel it?" We ought to say, "Did you hear Him?" The Spirit is also called "Christ" (Romans 8:9-10). Let us seek to connect with Him - not with a feeling, but the Person of Christ. We receive the Spirit by trusting in Christ. Today we are looking at the seven symbols of the Spirit that demonstrate a character trait or quality of God's Spirit. We find seven emblems of the Spirit in the Word of God: the dove; the anointing oil; wind or breath; cleansing fire; holy clothing; the seal of ownership; and the deposit. We can organize them further into three general categories: (1) His work in our inner person - dove, oil, and wind; (2) His work of purification - fire and clothing; and (3) His work of securing our salvation - seal and deposit. I do not preach many topical sermons. I usually preach on a certain text and seek to explain the text in the sermon. But it is also helpful to take a broader view of Scripture.
